You're mostly right. Altitude is fixed, so changes in your altimeter reflect a flaw in the method that it "reads" altitude, which is by measuring atmospheric pressure. There are now sonic, radar, and GPS methods of measuring altitude that eliminate this inaccuracy, but for most people an altimeter that works via air pressure is sufficient. When the pressure changes, the reading on your altimeter changes, even though the height above sea level is the same. Our bodies are best acclimated to barometric pressures that are near what one encounters at sea level - as altitude increases, barometric pressure decreases, (we say the air is "thinner") and the reduced pressure results in less oxygen being absorbed by the lungs. This is why your breathing becomes more difficult with higher altitudes or weather-related lower barometric pressure.

Thanks! I guess I was rather correct then when reading my small hand held 'altimeter' which is really reading barometric pressure but numbers in reverse: right now we are having stormy weather & the 'altimeter' is reading 'high' so the barometric pressure is really low....

Relatives coming here at 5200 ft. elevation from Iowa really feel so tired &'washed out' & I tell them it takes about six weeks top build up more red blood cells for this altitude so they will feel better!

Still don't understand why I feel tired at sea level though but do understand why I am not conscious of breathing at sea level like I am back home at 5200 ft.
