Hi Sharingsunshine: We live in the Franklin N.C. area. We've been here 5 years and love it. The bad weather seems to hit the Tenn/N.C. mountains and go north and south of us. Our area is "growing up"....wish I didn't have to say that but it's still nice. Lots of wildlife. Check it out.

It certainly isn't the SE US, but the Willamette Valley in Oregon sounds just like what you're looking for. Oct. through late March is wet and cool though.

My son and his wife still had tomato's and beans doing well last week. Roots crops had been harvested and were exceptional.

Very progressive and sustainability focused area of the country.

I thought I answered this post, but apparently I did not. I wanted to suggest you drive down I-81 to the area slightly west of Abingdon and the Blue Ridge -- in southeast Kentucky. This is a temperate zone, and is sometimes compared to San Francisco in climate. We have four distiunct, beautiful seasons, but they are rarely as extrme as where you live. I think the Pine Mountain separates us from the north, so we get semi-southern weather.
Also, land is beautiful and probably the chepasest in the United States. People ought to move here while they still can. IN future, this area may become a lot like the Blue Ridge, where land cost millions. A "linear" state park was created along the top ridge of Pine Mt.l, a lot like the Blue Ridge.
I own land backing up to this mountain, anbd I aim to preserve it for future generations. It is incredibly biodiverse -- the Nature Conservancy owns thousands of acres here, and there are several virgin forests still! It is considered one of the top four areas for biodiversity in the U.S., along with the Smokies, Fla. gulf coast and souther California.
Check out Pine Mountain, but please, help save it, not destroy it.
