Do snakes yawn? (w/ pics)

Hello all, I usually don't frequent this site, but a snake encounter earlier today had led me here. My wife and I found a black rat snake (I'm pretty sure) on the sun porch and had to move him out away from the house. He remained amazingly calm during the move and after we placed him on the ground we stayed around to watch him for a few minutes, camera in hand. I noticed that he seemed to yawn once every minute or so - I captured a couple of these moments with the camera (see below). I say it was a yawn because of how he acted when he did it. He would have his head raised up a little bit, toungue flicking, and then he would slowly open his mouth wide, hold it there for just a second and close it. All this while acting fairly calm. BTW, the photos were taken from a range of about 5-6 feet away, the camera has an amazing zoom and takes great photos; I am not a great photographer ;-)

So we were just curious if snakes yawn, and if not then any ideas what this guy (or gal) was doing? Was it supposed to be a scare tactic? Thanks for the help! David

You are correct that the snake is a black rat snake. The snake is not in a defensive posture, so I don't think it was trying to scare you. Generally, when snakes open their mouths they way you depict in the photos, the snake is resetting his lower jaw. This usually occurs after the snake has eaten a food item. Snakes can dislocate their lower jaw and the front of the jaw is not joined but has an elastic connective tissue. This allows the snake to eat a food item two to three times the size of its head. I don't see any lump in the snake, so it probably did not just eat. I have seen snakes that I know haven't just eaten open their mouths and appear to reset the jaw. I don't know if you would consider that a yawn, or for some other reason they had to reset their jaw.

Catching a snake is frustrating and time consuming if you are sitting out there waiting for it to come out of it's hole. You can't sit quietly enough to keep it from knowing you are there. They hunt by detecting heat and vibrations. The easiest way is to use the normal behavior of a snake to get it to go where you want. Snakes like warm dark places so you can lay out a paper bag ( a pillow case will be too bright, a burlap sack will do fine) with an opening arranged so the snake can go inside. Wire or a frame of some sort will help keep it open but the object is to create a dark cave. If there is no sun to make the bag warm put a heating pad under it. The snake eventually will go inside, curl up and go to sleep. Then you can scoop up the bag at the open end, twist it a couple of times and tie it off. Twilight is a good time as is noon. Those are times the snake finds a place to nap. Put the snake, bag and all in a garbage can with a snug lid. They can get out of anything that is shorter than a standard garbage can. The advantage to this is you don't have to chase it and it won't be injured and you won't get hurt either. Sandy

pjb, Sometimes you cannot avoid them though. I know someone who was turning on his faucet and got bit. Someone I used to work with was doing laundry inside her home and reached down to get some clothes and got bit, they figure it came through the dog door. I went to turn the lights off in my garage one evening and turned the corner in my hallway and there was one (I didn't get bit). Several species of rattlesnake will give you the chance to retreat but some like the Mojave green are just plain nasty. In the 20 years we've lived here I have dispatched more rattlers than I care to think about. My 4yr old g-son was less than 1/2 ft from one. Luckily it was injesting and couldn't strike. DH was weeding one winter and touched the back of one- thank God it was lethargic from the cold. I went to get a sweater one night (7/4) from DH's truck- stepped down and heard a rattle. I had to wait in the dark until it rattled again and then I jumped the other way. That was a 3' diamondback- it was less than a foot away. BTW, that 2 year old I posted about last month. The child is Dr. Sean Bush's little boy. Dr Bush who lives about 1/2 mile from us is the ponytail venom doctor from the TV channel Animal Planet's "Venom ER" show. Jude saw the snake in their backyard and tried to pick it up. Dr Bush keeps snakes, spiders, scorpians etc in his garage (well contained) and Jude thinking this was one of his daddy's snakes that got loose wanted to help. If you ever got bit Dr Bush is the man you want to take care of you. In fact he is on call if President Bush (no relation) ever gets bit at his ranch in Crawford.

scratches in toilet after snake

I have never posted any comments before but a few days ago I was glad I did! because this site contains answers I needed. I don’t have any of the cleaning supplies you guys mentioned so, I decided to just used Lime Away toilet cleaner pour on top of those scratches after drained out the water. I left it in there for 9 hours! and I was surprised those scratches came off and I didn’t even have to scrub them at all!! However, I just clean the bowl anyway (but no scrub I was using toilet wand) then turn the water back on. The bowl looked brand spank new!! Thanks for those tips

Good you're going back go the Vendor. Here's the issue w/ trying to save it. There's no way to tell if that darkening, becoming mush stuff (cold damage) has invaded below the soil. Likely yes, since you said the soil is still a bit damp. That mush can spread under the soil, fast, especially in the cold. That is not curable. FYI: Sans. can deal w/ some cold when dry, but the combination of cold & wet is the Kiss of Death for many succulents, especially Sans. which are tropical & not equipped to handle cold. I'm w/Stush on this, I try not to buy plants in the Winter. I'd suggest either buy it locally & pack it VERY well before bringing home or wait 'til Spring.

I've seen this behavior in a black rat snake once before as well. I went back to check on it the next day and it was dead, for no apparent reason from what I could make of it. Wierd...

We have a pet Ball Python and she does that from time to time. We don't think it's a yawn really, but just her stretching.

What I am curious about is the apparent two light-colored bands quite visible in the first shot about one/third of the way back; and again in the second photo, but then you can only see one light band.
What does everyone make of that?

Maybe that is a slight bulge from a vole or bird he just ate and is showing the pattern that is normally hidden in adult balck rats. That would explain the yawning.

Thanks for all the replies, perhaps it was a stretch or an attempt to relax his jaw after a meal - I guess we'll never know for sure. With regards to his bands, there were 4 or 5 that seemed to grow more faint towards his tail end.

We found this guy on Sunday on our porch, and on Monday afternoon we visited the home were are moving to in a few weeks and..........there on the porch was a black rat snake! Larger in size than this guy, I guess he got word we were moving in and wanted to make us feel like we were at home.

You lucky dog, a black rat at both your old and new house. I found 3 eastern garters in my back yard last summer, which was our first in this house. Haven't seen them yet this summer, I'm getting discouraged.

The white bands are part of the black rat's pattern. Some show up almost as clearly as a king snake while others are so faint you have to inspect the scales closely to see it.

I can see a lump in the snake, which means it had just eaten something, a rodent perhaps. Snakes dislocate their jaws when they swallow food items, so this is how they "re-set" their jaws-by "Yawning". But, yes, snakes DO sometimes yawn for the same reasons we do, though a real yawn lasts several seconds.

Ok David first of all i have three snakes and i was wondering the same dang thang until i checked out another website and snakes do yawn just to reset their lower jaw after eating a rodent or something:]
