Eagle feather law

My DH and I have been watching eagles nesting while camping the last two months in Maryland. While taking pictures he picked up a white feather and stuck it on the strap of the camera bag. We were informed by the camp host that if a park ranger came by and saw him with an eagle feather, there could be a hefty fine. We were surprised and to be honest thought it weird. I researched and found different info but nothing concrete about the amount of fine and who really enforces it? Thought I'd ask here. Any info?
