Stunning Coopers Hawk
Comments (2)I have seen a Coopers do this twice while looking out my kitchen window. The first time, I went to the sink to put a cup in, and saw this grey thing at the back of my yard near a large overgrown yew bush. I wasn't sure what I was looking at until it moved. The Coopers was on the ground with his wings extended and diving into the middle of the bush where many sparrows gather. He repeatedly did this, and also did not get a meal Saw this again another day, and he went at the bushes from the top, front, and side. Right now, there is a coopers out in my yard, perched up on a tree. He's been coming every day for a few weeks. They are beautiful to watch....See MoreLurking Coopers Hawk
Comments (4)Thank you marylandmojo. Probably the wildest thing I ever saw while birdwatching was a bobcat. I take the Washington Metro system to work every day. The station I take - Shady Grove - has a number of small lakes and drainage ponds around it. Consequently there are lots of birds hanging out. One day I decided to take my camera along and see if I couldn't get a picture of some thing. I don't have a zoom lens on the camera, but I thought I might get close enough to get a picture of some kind of bird. I was hoping for a king fisher or a night heron. As luck would have it I have my camera and no birds in sight, not even Canada geese which I had seen dozens of the previous day. I start looking for any thing to take a picture of. While looking in the tall grass I saw fuzzy white things that looked like cotton or milkweed pods. They were attached to something that I thought was a dead plant. I couldn't tell what it was. I decided to see if I couldn't focus my camera on whatever it was and it take a picture of it. I couldn't find whatever it was in the viewfinder so I moved the camera away and looked down the hill where the object was. What I saw was the head of a cat sticking up above the weeds. Well the weeds were about 3 feet tall. All of a sudden the cat jumped up in the air, it had been sitting on its haunches, and jogged up the hill. It was obvious it was a bobcat. I was so surprised to see the bobcat that I just watched it and didn't manage to get a picture. Richard...See MoreIs this a Cooper's Hawk??

Comments (24)The cats that disappeared for a few days, then returned - did they have the tips of one of their ears missing when they returned? It could have been someone doing trap-neuter-release with them. Usually when this is done, the tip of one ear is snipped off to identify the cat as having already been trapped and neutered or spayed. I got a neighborhood cat neutered a year or so ago, and paid them not to notch the ear, cause DH was strongly opposed to that part. We didn't know who the cat belonged to, but thought he might belong to someone. Anyway, we had him for close to a week before re-releasing him. We actually didn't even trap him. He came into our house when our son left a door open. I found him curled up on my daughter's bed when I got home. There are 2 more tomcats in our neighborhood I'm tempted to trap and get neutered. I know who one of them belongs to. I've given him all the information about where to get low cost or even free neutering, but so far he hasn't acted on the information. But anyway, I digress. The fact that the 3 cats disappeared at the same time, and returned at the same time, makes me think that someone got them fixed. By the way, predators can live pretty much anywhere. Cities have creeks and rivers that run through them, and all kinds of critters live in these areas. There are foxes, coyotes, and bobcats that live in the heart of Dallas and the surrounding suburbs.
