What kind of bird eggs are these?

I took some pictures of a bird nest with 3 speckled eggs. I wasn't able to see how big their sizes were as the nest was above my eye level and I had to lift the camera above the nest to snap an aerial picture of them.

There were three eggs when I first took the picture. When I took a picture of them again, there were only two. My daughter speculated that sometimes birds drop and destroy a bad egg and I have no idea if this is the case.

We have a lot of Cardinals here and Bluejays too, so perhaps these are eggs that belong to one of them? If you have any idea, I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

I think those were an eggs of a Bluejay bird. Blue jays are sometimes known to eat eggs or nestlings. This maybe the reason why only two eggs were left when you took another picture or maybe your daughter was right on her speculation.

Thanks, Jordanwalker, for responding to my question. It makes a lot of sense that those are the Blue Jay's eggs. They seem too big to be the Cardinal's eggs and we have a lot of Blue jays here.

The missing egg theory is interesting and it's kind of scary too for them to eat their own eggs/nestings! In some ways I'm not too surprised too as they're pretty aggressive birds. One Summer, they built a nest over out garden arch and three little birds hatched. The parents were very protective of them and kept sqawking at us whenever we walked under the nest. They always bully other birds including the Cardinals that regularly visit our garden. The Cardinals aren't aggressive, but they sure are brave enough to not to give up their ground easily.

BE#3 is a great-flavored snap bean. It's just not terribly productive in that stage, and there are many snap varieties which are better suited. After my crop failure in 2010, I am growing BE#3 again this year, in quantity... three 24-foot rows. Like all of my beans this year, they suffered from early stunting. After being planted on time, they germinated well, then just sat there for almost all of June. Still haven't positively identified the cause, but it affected many of my beans. Fortunately, BE#3 is fully recovered, has been growing vigorously, and now has a lot of pods in snap stage. It could be a stretch to get dry seed before frost, but I am hopeful. I want to return my seed stock to a level where I can again share it freely. By the way, my first planting this year was with seed saved from 2005, the year I first grew it. It was 'preferred' seed, the largest & healthiest that I separated out for that year. Age had taken its toll, only about 25% of that seed germinated. I culled out the seed saved from 2010 (about 75% was bad) and replanted with the good seed in the dead spots; those germinated almost 100%.

way back when i farmed for a living we saw an ad in the catalog that we ordered our baby chicks. we ordered a dozen straight run araucana chicks. and paid 50Cents each plus shipping. which we thought was expensive. But once they started laying pastel colored eggs in green and blue and pink and tan. we were real happy with them and we sold the extra fresh farm eggs. everybody wanted the easter eggs! I set up a incubater in the celler and hatched out lots of eggs and also traded eggs with a friend who also had the chickens too. to have a bigger gene pool of chicks. a few years later i was taking 12 dozen eggs to work each week and always had requests for more, i got a promotion at work and gave up farming to move to another town to work. in the ads in the sunday paper this week i saw an add selling baby auracana chicks for $3.00 each.

Cardinal eggs usually number from 2-5 per nesting and are whitish marked with browns and greys. Their nests are twigs and grasses at low to mid levels located in thickets or bush. Blue Jays eggs number from 3-7 and are blueish to greenish. Nests are cups of grass and or twigs and are built at mid to upper levels of tress. Yes, birds do dispose of "bad eggs" and Blue Jays can be carnivorous if food is scare. Native birds will also fend off or kill of babies of species that are non-native to the area (such as sparrows as these migrated over on ships centuries ago). Have fun birding!
