What's making these big sandpiles?

We have lived in Florida for 3 years and have never had this problem before. We live in the sandhills with pine forests in North Central Florida. In just one day something has made at least 15 sand piles about 1 foot high and 2-3 feet wide all around the property. There are no holes in the piles, it's as if they have been pushed up from below. We have gopher tortoises, so I know what their burrows look like but that's not what did these.

Could it be armadillos? As I said, no holes, even when I push the piles down. I also posted on the Florida gardening forum. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

ROFL! Nope, not gophers. Not in FL. It is the illusive Nine-Banded Armadillo. They make big ol' sand piles where they root for worms and grubs. The sand piles often look like ant beds. They come out at night and do their dirty work, and sometimes on overcast days they will sneak out around fence lines or woods lines and root, especially if they have little ones following them around.

Armadillos are extremely unique. When they breed, they let down one ovum. Once fertilized, this 'blastocyst' sort of hibernates until the timing is right for it to divide and implant (when environmental variables are good). It will divide into four separate blastocysts and then they will implant and grow. Thus, the Nine-Banded Armadillo babies are always born in sets of four, always the same sex (because they are from the same egg) and have their eyes open and are ready to go as soon as they are born, like baby chickens.
Nine-Banded Armadillos are not native to the US, but they migrated here on their own many years ago, via Texas, from Mexico. They are hardy and can thrive in moist as well as arid climates. Their ability to 'hold' their fetus implantation (up to two years from the actual time of breeding) is how they have succeeded so well.

Thanks Ottawapepper. I opened the holes in the peppers, and i don't see those critters but i guess i will try trapping them according to the article. As plants mature with taller stems and tougher leaves, earwigs aren't as much of a problem to the foliage. Earwigs can destroy the fruit as well. They eat a hole through the pepper close to where it meets the stem, eating it from the inside. This deforms the pepper and ruins it for human consumption. Control Remove earwigs by trapping them. Shallow cans like tuna fish or cat food cans are good traps. Put about one-half inch of tuna or sardine oil or oil with a drop of bacon grease added in the can bottom and hide them amid pepper plants where earwigs were seen. Rolled-up tubes of moist newspaper or corrugated cardboard are also effective. Put the traps out before dark and shake trapped earwigs into a pail of soapy water the next morning to kill them. Repeat this daily until no more earwigs are being caught. If earwigs are found actively eating pepper plants at night, put soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it on the earwigs. Prevention Encourage insect-eating animals like toads, frogs and lizards to live in your garden. A combination of trapping and habitat management should keep garden earwig populations from becoming a problem. anyone have any spare lizards they don't want?

If you discussed the cherry wood top and told the designer that's what you wanted, then IMO you should make a big deal out of it. Regarding the base drawer, find out if you paid for the pegboard. If so, ask for a credit. Since it wasn't listed on the order I doubt you were charged for it. Since you're the one that knows what was thoroughly discussed with the designer, it's difficult to say who should pay for what. For the prices you've been quoted to make corrections you could probably have the redo's done much cheaper than going thru the designer. I'd take the base drawer to a cabinet maker and I'd also get a quote from him for a new cherry wood top. If the desk was painted, you could have it repainted for much less than $1000. As you've discovered, just because professionals are brought in to do the work doesn't mean the homeowner can assume everything will run smoothly. Double check everything!

God bless you, Amber. I have 5 myself. (15, 14, 12, 11 and 9). A 3 year old is a BIG responsibility. Not that an older child is NOT but at 3, they obviously need a lot more attention and overview than a 13 year old would, who could perhaps make their own sandwich for lunch, for example. I have to agree though...what's one more? It would be a huge adjustment at first but I'm sure you would have no regrets in the long run. The child does deserve a stable life...but just to be sure, is BM unstable? I realize that she is virtually homeless at the moment and is living with Dad but that is really not an immediate reason to assume custody. Is she neglectful? On drugs, maybe? Not a good mother? Is she abusive? I'm not trying to stand up for her, but I'm just trying to understand why there is a sudden interest in taking custody of the child. If she is a good parent to the child but is going through a difficult time at the moment with coming to the end of a relationship, that isn't really an immediate cause for trying to take custody, I think. Knowing me, I've probably overlooked an explanation above somewhere...if I have and the woman is NOT a good parent, I would be 100% supportive of my DH going for custody of the child...but remember that we can't always go by the ex-boyfriend's thoughts right away. I mean, they DO have a dog in the fight and will usually only tell one side of the story. Perhaps a welfare check to her Dad's house is in order?

florantha, your utensils inset sounds very practical. I've seen it in magazines before and thought about it here. I'm going with granite on my perimeter counters, so I'd hesitate to make to many cutouts. The kitchen in it's previous life had a small 9" (12" face frame) drawer to the left and a 15" to the right (sorta). That 15" drawer was my silverware drawer, could you believe it was the widest drawer in that kitchen? Yes, I did buy it this way. riverspots and attygirl are right, the resale is not impacted. The neighborhood boasts two of the top schools in the school district (elem & middle) as well as the price of houses is extremely reasonable for our town, so yes, most people would overlook the lack of drawers or not even notice. Here it is in all it's drawerless glory: As for prep utensils, baking utensils, foils, parchment and wraps, they're all going in the new island which is the prep zone, immediately across from the range. Either way, I think that I should re-work the plan to fit some drawers in. I think I will appreciate having the pot holders/oven mitts immediately accessible. I may have to break down and buy another cabinet for this. Thanks to all for sharing your thoughts on this!

Why not gopher? They do appear to inhabit North Central Florida. Pocket Gopher I'm certainly no expert but reading that article doesn't rule out "Gopher" in my mind? What am I missing?

The most common problem associated with pocket gophers is the numerous large, sandy mounds they deposit on the surface.

If you read the original description carefully, Granny, I'd think that you'd eliminate armadillo damage. It absolutely sounds like the southern pocket gopher to me.

Definitely Pocket Gophers.
FYI - if you are doing research into these, make sure you search for "Pocket Gophers". People in the northern and western states sometimes mistakenly call ground squirrels and even marmots "gophers".
You have the real Gophers, the Pocket Gophers.

They push up the sand piles from the sand they are removing from their burrows.
