Name This Animal

Not A Llama But What?

I spotted this animal at Wildlife World near Phoenix. Pretty sure it's a camelid of some sort, but doesn't match my ideas of a llama. Unfortunately, it doesn't closely match my notions of an alpaca, guanaco, or vicuna either. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Very dirty llama or alpaca ... if you washed it and fluff-dried it it would look like the cute fluffy ones.

Alpacas are a lot smaller than alpacas - sheep-sized things.

I was thinking it was a longhair alpaca, as opposed to a wooly alpaca -- but their hair is longer. Possibly this one was shorn and was growing back out. It doesn't look much like a llama to me.

I sent off a soil sample to be tested several years ago when I was reseeding my lawn and the report said the pH was 7.6. There are limestone rock outcrops visible in several places in my backyard (and around the whole county) so I guess that makes sense. The report recommended adding horticultural sulfur before seeding the new lawn. I've read about people having good results using sawdust as a mulch (not a soil amendment) for potatoes so I'm going to give that a try this year. My native soil is clay so it's not the so good for tuber formation. As I understand it most of the true feeder roots for the potato plant go downwards looking for nutrients while the tubers are formed at the ends of stolons that grow outward from the part of the stem that is below the soil level and thus the potatoes end up in a circle at about the same level as the seed potato or even a little higher hence the need to hill potatoes to keep the tubers from turning green. So it seems that there is little need for nutrient rich soil above the seed potato and a lightweight mulch like sawdust, leaves or straw will keep the potatoes clean and easy to harvest and maybe even have less scab than they would if they were formed in soil. You can do that, but it only takes once getting sick, or seeing someon get sick, from that to convince someone it is not a good idea to follow "old school thought" today. Sensible use has nothing to do with disease transmission, composting can destroy the disease pathogens and that is what should be done. Some of these pathogens take many years to show a course of organ destruction and because of that it is difficult to show a cause and affect as with many pesticides. Simply because you do not see signs and symptoms does not necessarily mean you are not infected. Hystoplasmosis does not show up for many years after you have been exposed.

Jay, we sent the camera back. I don't think it was working correctly. We will go to Bass Pro and buy locally next time so if we need help we can get it. The flash wouldn't go off even in the AC house. I allotted for the time delay but still wasn't satisfied that the flash was working. Could have just been me.

I think it's an alpaca. we went to an alpaca show a few years ago near here. They let us pet them. They are very shy. The fur was extremely dense and soft. They had alot of items for sale made out of their wool. Socks, sweaters, etc. Very expensive items. We thought of raising them, but they are very sensitive to infections and parasites. It was too complicated to be bothered.

Yeah, that's my best bet. There are, as best I can figure, wooly alpacas -- which are easy to spot, they look like a cross between a llama and a french poodle -- and longhair alpacas, which are relatively unusual.

what a beautiful alpaca. -I always wnted one when kids wrre small cause they follow children like a dog would. But the breeder would not sell me just one. He claimed they are herding animals and a lone would die young they need to be in herd or paired up. my town would not allow me to get two.

Yes, it's an Alpaca, they are considerably larger than sheep.
