What kind of snake is this?

I work in Holly Springs NC and this was found next to a large pond. We are right outside the range for a water moccasin and we have a lot of northern and banded water snakes which is what I'm leaning towards, however I wanted to get second opinions. I know snakes can flare out their heads but this looked a little too defined for me to make a definite call. Thanks! I really appreciate all of the help!!

Looks like a brown water snake: "nonvenomous large heavy-bodied snake with a wide, flat head and bulging jaws"

Nope, not a Corn, and definitely not a Copperhead. This is an Eastern Milk Snake(Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum), a member of the family that includes the King Snakes. The pattern on the head is different from a Corn, and these look nothing at all like a Copperhead, not even close.

I assume that is a captive snake (or an escaped captive). While the pattern and coloration might first suggest that it is a striped morph California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula), the head shape and pattern tells a different story. The head shape looks to me like that of a milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum). Therefore I am pretty sure this is one of the captive hybrids between a Cal King and a Milksnake.

Appears to be an anerythristic corn snake. Quite common...who ever had the snake should know that and have further information for you.

It is not a copperhead. Baby copperheads looks just like adult copperheads (and nothing like this). This is a harmless baby Racer (Coluber constrictor). It probably wandered in through some small opening somewhere. Sweep it up with a broom and release it outside and neither of you will be the worse for the experience.

Definitely a Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon). You can see the pattern slightly in the middle of the snake. Watersnakes often get darker with age, like this.

The apparent width of the head is due to the snake clamping down on the catfish's tail.
