Orange caterpillars

We've had these orange caterpillars in our house in Philadelphia, PA since we've moved in 1999. No one, repeat no one, has been able to identify them - Terminix guys (who treated the house, but the caterpillars came back after we stopped using the service), friends, etc. I've done Google searches, bug forums, bug identification sites, the whole thing.
Showed them to the carpet cleaner guy who said he'd only seen them in one other house in our neighborhood.
They're active late March through mid November and occasionally show up in the colder months as well.
Does anyone have an idea as to what they are? We don't have a moth problem and they don't seem to actually do anything. They're just annoying and we can't pinpoint a source. We thought when we had the wall to wall replaced they would go away, but no,
Thanks.
