What happens to caterpillars when...

they run out of leaves in the wild? There are a couple of species of Asclepias plants in the area but they are not vigorous species such as A. tuberosa or A. syriaca and there are clumps of only about 5 plants in any one spot. I noticed that one of these clumps of A. exaltata was covered in milkweed tussock moth (Euchaetes egle) cats and it is obvious that they will soon run out of leaves...I know they can switch to dogbane but I don't see any of this in the vicinity. I find it hard to believe that they would just starve to death....do they make use of another less palatable host? Anyone know?
