Do ants actually raise aphids to eat on your plants

I was told recently that ants like aphids so much that they actually farm/raise them on your plants? If so is their a particular type of ant that does this and how can you identify/solve the problem. I have noticed ants crawling on some of my plants and wondered if they were hunting for other insects to eat but maybe they are actually raising aphids?
Has anyone else heard of this?
I also just found a large number of red lily beetles feasting on my lilies after blooming; Got a picture of 2 of them mating.
