What is this larva?

We found a 2 inch long, light tan caterpillar or larva with a brown face lodged inside a piece of firewood. He made a tunnel into it. It is a piece of oak. We brought it inside and it got away. We're trying to find out what it could possibly be. It is living under a wooden chest near the firewood. We are in lower NYS. Any ideas?

An Oak Borer grub, the larva of a beetle, would be the expected animal making holes in oak.

There are several kinds of oak borers and their larvae could look similar. A Google image search "oak borer" shows pale grubs with a darker "faces".

You imply it has taken up residence under a chest--indoors? The adult beetle could possibly emerge in the future.

And it might be something else that was using the pre-existing hole as a shelter.

A Caterpillar is the more specific name of a larva of butterflies and moths.
