Phoebe's holiday camp
Comments (34)Hi Marie! It sounds like you're having a great time and we'll be looking forward to those toddler pictures... Your baby Bouv. here is doing well. I consider all puppy accidents to be the fault of us humans for not paying attention/reading the signals right. It takes a bit of time to adjust to read her particular language so some accidents were expected... Today was a very mellow day here. Misty has now fully accepted Phoebe as a member of her pack - she initiated her into the joys of head wrestling today...:-) Head wrestling is a game she and Copper invented. The only rule I enforce is that the big beast has to keep her feet on the ground. The way it works is Misty is on higher ground (the lounger on the back porch in today's case) and the big dog is standing on the floor beside her. Misty pounces on the big dog's head and that dog tries to grab her and flip her over. They then proceed to wrestle back and forth until one of them tires of the game. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera with me so didn't get any pictures, but maybe some of you remember the pictures of her and Copper playing on the loveseat. The same thing was going on with Phoebe this moning on the lounger on the back porch. Barb was here today. She and Phoebe got along very well and they had a vigorous game of chase-me (Barb pretended to chase Phoebe and Phoebe joyously raced around the paths...) We all went for a walk past the library to drop off some books. I like this picture, in part because the sign on the library window says Laugh Out Loud - a comedy reading program for kids - seems appropriate for Phoebe! Here's the classic Woody's Doggie Holiday Camp picture from this afternoon (just after this picture Phoebe nuzzled my waist with her head, rooted in the training pouch with dog cookies that I'm wearing, and absconded with a cookie or two! I handn't realized the pouch was unzipped... She's a smart dog. Misty and Phoebe are definitely much mellower together now. When Randy got home tonight, we went for the third walk of the day. Zoe (yearling Rottweiller) was out on her driveway so introductions were made. Phoebe was skittish but eager; Zoe was dubious :-) A generous dose of cookies was applied all round. It takes more than a strange big hairy dog on her driveway to keep Zoe away from her cookies! So Phoebe had a good day at camp today :-)...See MoreCamping with bears!
Comments (6)The February issues of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life contained special sections on bear attacks and fatalities. They found that the liklihood of surviving a bear attack was much greater for victims who were armed, and rarely are victims able to outrun the bear. Bears sense fear and running as capitulation and will attack. As hunters, we tend to be armed when were in bear country. As armed campers, we've been in campgrounds during cougar sightings. As human beings, we intend on being survivors and enjoying the great outdoors. We wouldn't take a drive in our cars unarmed much less enter the wilderness without that dependable survival equipment....See MoreHELP.......Newbie Campers Here !!!!!
Comments (13)We have a 31' travel trailer and go camping all the time. Before you leave pack it with all the essential of your normal kitchen/home so that you have everything handy. I bought stuff to leave in my trailer so I wasn't raiding my own house for stuff. Before we leave I always plan our meals and make my grocery list and go right before we leave and then come back and pack up the camper. Take plenty of blankets and sheets. My DH likes to leave the camper a/c at about 65 since he says he's not paying for electricity so our camper is very cold at night. Bring lawn chairs and a plastic table cloth. Campsites usually have picnic table, but they are not very clean. We have 2 strands of white christmas lights that we string up on our awning for light at night. They provide plenty of light for dinners after dark and if you just want to hang out and talk outside. We always unplug the when we go to bed. We also have to dogs that we always bring camping with us. One of them is a lab and she loves going swimming in the lake while we are camping. Any places we have ever camped required dogs to be on leashes at all times. We bought both of our dogs stakes to put into the ground and they have a 6-8' chain so that they have plenty of room to roam. Bring a small shovel and ziplock bags to put their poop in. You definately want sealed bags because if not your trash will be stinking very quickly. Both of our dogs sleep on the floor in our trailer at night. We have a small trash can inside and a larger one outside so that we aren't running to the campsite dumpster constantly. Most of all have fun and take a pen and paper to jot down things you forgot and will want with you next time. You and your dogs will have a ton of fun!!...See MoreDogs as tools
Comments (16)My dog is a tool. By his own choice. He prefers to spend time watching out the window, looking for anything that might harm us. We've never once tried to teach him to warn us that someone is on the property, or lingering too long on the property. He's never outside alone. He wants to protect us. He investigates every noise he hears that is abnormal. He's always watching out the window, even when getting love. And he sleeps in the loft, where he's able to see us in our room, and the street out front. He's got different barks for play, "I'm going to pee myself and I don't know where you are!!!", "Oh, someones here!" and "Someone whos definately not supposed to be here and doing what they're doing, is here!" I think some dogs just NEED jobs. This, is his own job that he has given himself. A dog intended for pet, has appointend himself family guardian. And I am okay with that. He still gets everything a plain old pet would get. The loves, the hugs, the toys, the walks, everything. But we get the added security from him, that we might not from a poodle. I can safely and confidently say that I would trust my pitbull to protect a child, before he'd hurt one. My beagle has given herself the job of "Cat Crusader."The cats abide by her laws, and her laws are based on when we decide they are being bad or good. We have never once taught or encouraged her to go after the cats and chase them out of the room when we've instructed them to get down/out/off of something. But she does. I think you'll find most dogs give themselves jobs and make themselves tools, even if its something of no use to you or something you'd rather they didn't do. Or something silly like chasing the kitties away when they're misbehaving. They need a purpose, and if you don't give them one, they'll find their own. So whether you get a dog to be a tool, I bet if everyone here picked apart their dogs behaviour and routine, you'd be able to find something they do on a regular basis that might be seen as helpful, or job like....See MorePeggy Bishop_McVay
