Eastern Bluebirds

I was so excited to have Bluebirds in our backyard this year. This is Madison and Mitchell putting a contract down on the house back in March. Since then, they are on their second brood. Three of the 5 survived and now are permanent residents in our yard with their parents. Now we have a second brood with 5 eggs that hatched around 1 week ago. If my timing is correct they should fledge in about 12 days! So I am really hoping they all survive this time around. These are the sweetest birds and so nice to have around.

Very cool...are you using a spooker? Some areas like where my MIL lives in Louisiana there aren't many HOSP to contend with as she is out in the country. I have had two full nesting's this year and I am sure there will be a third as it is only the 23rd of June. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kate, Congrats on attracting a pair of blues. Please don't remove the new clutch of eggs. It could be that the male is infertile or a problem with the female. She is incubating right? A member on bluebird nut cafe had eggs hatch on day 18 so anything is possible. I would suggest you join the bluebird nut cafe and post your question there, you will get much more assistance with this problem and any others you encounter. It doesn't appear to be a bunting......................no dark on it whatsoever, just a beautiful solid blue. I wish I could capture a picture of it at the feeder, but any type of movement and he is gone. I have been trying for a couple of weeks now.

Hi Shelly, I know how exciting it is to watch these birds I'm on my 6th yr. with nestings, actually this was my first winter here where I live in the St. Louis area that my blues didn't leave during the winter...I kept them fed all winter with dried mealworms and it was so fun to watch them in the snow. My blues second brood fledged this week and have already started building the 3rd nest. Good luck with your next nesting.

I am new to bluebirding as I just put up a nestbox in late February. I woke up on my birthday to see a male and female atop the box. So very exciting and what a perfect gift. Since then, about a week ago, I see them some days but others not. This morning I saw the male and thought I saw the female inside but not sure. I'm in an urban area of Atlanta but I haven't seen any HOSP. Or snakes. Does anyone know if I need the guards and traps now?

Those birds look so lovely in their cute house. You're so lucky to have bluebirds in your backyard. I want to have a bird in our backyard as well even if it's not a Bluebirds. I'm also excited to see their new baby birds. I hope you can also share their pics to us.

Yes pandora you should always put a stovepipe baffle on the pole underneath the box to protect from climbing predators. The box should also be on a slick metal pole. Have you joined the bluebirdnut cafe yet?
