Sudden Hops Death?! :(
Comments (15)Hops vines are very vigorous, but so far, mine has not outgrown the area I planted it in. I, too, have the Golden Hops, which is very attractive in spring, but the leaves turn a rather dull green when the heat sets in. I have yet to find anything on mine, except for the generalist moths MissSherry mentions. In fact, if it does die back, I won't be that disappointed. Hops do grow from rhizomes, and can easily, like most tubers, rhizomes and bulbs, easily be overwatered. But, on the other hand, they're pretty tough characters, too. I may put my Turk's Cap close by and let it take over now that you mention it, MissSherry. I thought that Japanese Hops was an annual, unlike regular hops. But maybe it reseeds? Catherinet, my suggestion to anyone who is growing, either by accident or intention, Stinging Hops, get rid of it and instead grow False Nettle, which does not have those awful stinging heirs. I saw my first Question Mark today. She was virtually "living" on the banana feeder! I hope she lays eggs. I've also collected a couple more cats from the False Nettle, and have 5 babies now. Saw the Red Admiral female flying around yesterday, so she may have layed more eggs. Released my first Hackberry Emperor today. The caterpillars and chrysalis stage are a lot lengthier when the temps are cool like they have been. Susan...See MoreNH Eastern Bluebirds Nesting in March
Comments (13)My bluebirds have been building a nest since early - mid week last week and look about finished, here in N.E. Ohio The latest weather I just saw, after 3 straight 80 degree days, says we are gonna be in the 40's by the end of the weekend! BAD!!! Cherry, Dogwood, and Magnolias have ALL broke out into bloom! Other trees are pushing out leaves. The trees are WEEKS ahead of normal. Really hope my blues don't get a cold spell. Like tobygirl, I also lost a nest of blues to a sudden cold snap. One evening they were very poorly tending to the young. It was around 70 then. The next day, 50! 4-5 nestlings starved to death. I pulled the plug on the attempt after observing them laying in the nest stiffly, with no ability to chirp and couldn't raise their heads. When there were winds and cold rain. ~Tim~...See MoreTRES nestlings death: weather or flies?
Comments (1)Im so sorry to hear this....it has been a TERRIBLE year for the TRES. If you look through the last few pages here you will see that many were lost. I lost 3 babies, the I am SO sad thread. Just one of many posts reporting lost TRES. The National Wildlife magazine april/may edition has an article titled Empty Skies Insect-eating birds that feed on the wing are vanishing from parts of North America and scientists dont know why. In my case I know it had to do with losing 1 of the parents leaving just one to feed 6 babies in horrid weather. I think most of the sad reports on here are weather related. I have not seen any attempt at a second nesting here but it has only been six days and 3 babies did fledge. There is one report of a second nesting on the forum so far this year. Good luck with yours!...See MoreBluebird babies (already fledged)
Comments (2)2 of the babies from our last clutch are still hanging around. They will beg, but I haven't observed the parents feeding them anymore. Interesting thing happened yesterday. There are 4 new eggs which the female is incubating. I observed one of the fledglings enter the box, and he/she never came out! It was late afternoon...quite warm...Was he snuggling with the female? couldnt guess. I will add that during a very cold spell in the winter, every evening 5 bluebirds would arrive and crowd into the house. In the morning, they would fly out, one by one, wake up a little, then fly off. But every evening, they would arrive, one by one, and go back into their "bedroom " together!...See Morelcmoore99
