Gilbertson PVC Bluebird Nest Box

Have any of you used a Gilbertson PVC Bluebird Nest Box? From what I can find on the internet they are supposed to be about the best you can get, I have never seen any of them for sale except on the internet and the are kind of high priced. I know I can build them for less and I'm thinking about building some to use and also some to sell on ebay.

Nicknack, can you get a van ert to trap the hosp that are nesting now? They come in the mail pretty quick and are usually easy to install,then you can be rid of the pest. Can you get the new gilbertsons but keep the others up for tres or whomever? I think sometimes these birds like a variety of types to choose from. I'm not sure how they come as far as being easy to install,but I bet your local wild bird store would have all the necessary hardware to make it easy to mount your new boxes. Thank you for baffling and caring for these birds.

We have one Audubon, and two of the Jack/Dan Finch boxes out of Bailey, NC. They're all poled & baffled. As we were unpacking last year, the new Audubon box was the first one we found, so it went up first. While it is a tad smaller than the Bailey boxes (to me it's less confusing than calling a BBird box a Finch box), we had two successful clutches last year. The Bailey box we put up last year ended up hosting Chickadees, but is in a less desirable location for Blues evidently. That's why this year we put up a third box, and it's a Bailey box - we'll see Who ends up Where, and in What box. I posted last year asking "is it the Box, or the Location they like?" and we're all not sure.... Good luck!!

Boy,am I relieved.This morning at 6:15,I saw Daddy at the box,thought he just might be feeding Mom.I didn't want to check that early in case Mom might be laying another egg.Just now when I came home,I decided to check the box.Dad was in a nearby tree and when I opened the box,there was Mom sitting there all crouched down,nice and cozy.she never even moved.Needless to say,I closed the box quickly and left her alone.I was very relieved and excited.I have no idea if there are more than 3 eggs or not,just happy they are ok.Also on the way back to the house,I walked by a box that has been mounted on the side of the garage for a few years and has always gone unoccupied.My husband mentioned the other day that he saw a bird sticking his head out ,but was unsure what it was.As I walked by,I gently tapped and out came a white breasted nuthatch.How exciting,that is a first for me.Very cool.This box is difficult to open,so I will just have to leave it alone and enjoy.Glad to share some good news.....Jane

I have 2 Gilbertson PVC boxes (or did you mean the other Gilbertson?) When one brood has fledged, I swap it out, and take my time to clean out the finished nest. Our bluebirds have nested there 3-4 broods/summer for 10-12 years, all in Gilbertson PVC. HOSP will use anything if allowed, maybe not preferred, but they will use anything even a lamppost, store sign, or between bricks of a building. I belive HOSP do not prefer it over other style boxes, however, I have trapped and removed any who dared even remotely think about nesting in my yard. Easy to monitor. PVC can be hot in southern climates. Difficult to check for blowfly because you can't lift the nest. My bluebirds love these pvc nestboxes. Every time I put up a new one they might be already nesting but they check out the new pvc. They do nest most of the time in a new box if they find one like the one they left. I have 4 of these pvc and have had a lot of bluebirds pairs checking it out. I just don’t know what it is about these boxes but I will tell you they love them.

Be careful. The ones on Cardinal Corner and over places are made by someone or people and the one I got from Cardinal corner the person didn’t make the roof overhang as long as it was supposed to be. They cut off of the roof to save on money. I know I have 3 more I got when Gilbertson was still selling them. I will use the short roof one as a spare but won’t order anymore. It’s all about making money not the bluebirds.

I make my own using 8 inch plastic pipe about 12 inches long. I cut out a bottom from 1 inch thick pine, drill holes in the wood as a drain, then staple a wire basket to the wood bottom out of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. The top can be tricky to attach, and I am still experimenting with different ways of doing this. Sometimes I use roofing shingles and sometimes I cut up soft drink cans to make my own shingles. I make the opening oval shaped (seems to be most effective) I have been using these boxes for almost 20 years and have had great success with them.
