Barn Swallows Disappeared
Comments (0)We've had barn swallows nest in our entry for 8 years, they return every spring. Same thing this spring, the babies fledged approx. 2 weeks ago. Normally, the female lays another clutch of eggs right away. This time, the fledgelings returned for a few nights and then, everyone disappeared. No swallows on the power lines, no swallows to be seen anywhere in the neighborhood. Has anyone ever had this happen before and, if so, did you figure out why they left? Nothing has changed, no construction or anything that might scare them away....See MoreStrange little Barn Swallow
Comments (8)You could try hanging an artificial barn swallow cup for them to use.. Here's a link : http://www.americanartifacts.com/smma/per/nestord.htm The maker has done some research, and tested it out multiple times.7 artificial nests had eggs and 2 previously built natural nests had eggs. No new nests had been built. Plus, nest cups are preferred over the more popular nesting shelves....See MoreHelp! Other birds trying to take over barn swallow's nest
Comments (16)They are no different in Europe than anywhere else. It is true in the animal world it is hard to find a species that's completely innocent. Bluebirds will also kill and take over a nest if they have too. Barn swallows can do the same. I can give you a link with a story about swallows sealing a nest that a sparrow took over, and they sealed it with a sparrow inside (but the link is not in English). Swifts in Europe often take over a nest by killing the birds with its claws. The american cowbird is an angel compared to the European cuckoo bird :) I could continue with these kind of stories forever. Any way, I don't have a problem with your or anybody else's advise, but you should list all the possible solutions, not just YOUR favorite....See MoreQuestion about barn swallow fledglings.
Comments (2)Thanks Lisa, I like the thought of the little birds hanging out with their cousins from the barn nest who are their seniors by approx. a week. I imagine the single parent bird did have his wings full trying to round up his whole brood each night, and probably the first two nights were enough to ensure their safety. He or she is probably in need of a rest at this point. I hope the severe rainstorms did not endanger the swallows. If by "baby" you mean my cat, I did as always and kept her in during the hazardous fledging period, but she's in and out now. She's not having much luck hunting though; only a few rodents turning up on the porch. I think the rain this past week has halted/slowed the activities of all life forms....See Moretracey_nj6
