new to me yellow about the size of cardinal

I was able to get three pictures of the back and side. He was feeding from one of the hummers feeders, which strikes me as strange, considering that it rained most of the night, and water is standing everywhere, seems he is use to this method of getting water.

His whole body is yellow with a hue of brown on it. A cardinal was a few inches away and the yellow bird was the same size if not a little longer, considering the beak is pointed, he was sticking his beak into the slit on the feeder. His beak is not long like a hummer but longer then most none seed breaking beaks of the song birds, wish I had grabbed my video camera instead of the Kodak, that way you get it all and I could then have made prints of whatever I wanted. this one picture shows more than the other two.

Not a oriole, the head back and sides were yellow. i did a color chart comparison that I use for mixing colors when I paint, his color is hard to get right, it's a mix of yellow and brown, with the brown being transparent. when he came back he was so skittish, and only stayed for a second, but with his back completely to me, but he/she, was darker and had a blue hue to it,still seeing a yellowness, but the white looked florescence and light blue. If you enlarge the picture that here and the last you can see that the color of the outer wing feathers has a blueness.

He has never landed anywhere but on the hummer feeders and he seem to imitate the hummers.

Answer: standard button garden mum planted last fall, blooming now in July. A happy coincidence ! Dark red touches are Jacob Cline monarda, knockout rose new growth showing, and canna "Wyoming" leaves. Second Question: "Threedogsmom, I have those exact daylilies that are in your first picture - rust with bright yellow - a gift with no name tag. I always wondered but assumed they are just a variety of Ditch Lily. Is that right, or do you have some other name for them?" Answer: They are not the common ditch lilies - you can see a ditch lily in my second pic down, to the right, a tall scape towards the front/right of the bed. I do not remember the name of the burgundy and yellow daylilies in the first pic, but they have multiplied very well in just 2 years ! Got at Lowe's.

It's easier to write back if you leave your whatever. Rice sounds like fun but when the new leave showed up I just made a fresh slanted cutting on the base of the stem and used the thickest branches, a little Rootone and put them in the ground and that was my very first crack at cuttings and today I have a huge dark red amazing large bush with many blooms, where each branch could be a bouquet but no odor. Now I have five different bushes from bouquets and one I'm working on is yellow. Mind you some bouquets are waxed to lengthen their life but will never reproduce. In my trials if they leaf they usually bloom but will become a nice bush first and I cut off the new buds for a bit so they can bush out. Nothing to lose have fun and put a piece of rice in one cutting and that might turn out to be your prize posession. debbysunshine@hotmail.com There are no roots for a bit so no fertilizer just water.

Sounds like you're on your way to having fresh salad ingredients even this fall. Lettuce grows fast as long as you plant in rich soil & water daily in the hot weather. You might need to shade it a bit now. Our daughter told me yesterday she's figured she & hubby have saved about $60 just in lettuce greens from growing their own this summer. First time gardens can be productive! Your original question was about how to have enough to keep you in salads... One way to plant enough for harvest for your family of 5 is to plant each week what you'd eat each week. Lettuces can be cut & grow again for up to 3 cuttings or you can pick the outer leaves & let the centers grow. I prefer to plant transplants as somehow direct sowing lettuce doesn't work as well for me. For varieties: Romaines stay crunchy. Leaf lettuces are easy to cut & come again harvest. Kids will eat what they grow, so you're off to a great start with them. Doesn't the book say one 4x4 box per person? Larger or more boxes for enough for canning, freezing or drying. I encourage gardeners to start what they can care for planting, watering, weeding, & harvesting. If they can't do a box per person the 1st year. I can't remember if mulch is mentioned in the book, but I have good results with mulching in the boxes using dried grass clippings from grass w/o weed & feed. It keeps the soil moist & decomposes adding nutrients. The grass clippings dry quickly on a tarp just stir with a stick or plastic rake throughout the day. Cover by folding the tarp over at night if not dry yet & dry another day. I've taken a week or more sometimes to dry it & it still works once dry even if it gets a bit sour smelling. Hope that helps! I was surprised to see this thread resurrected, but I do have additional information. Scherr's added birch to their 7-year color shift experiment, and here is the result: http://www.scherrs.com/contents/en-us/d53_ColorShift.html (birch is at the bottom). I am still making some decisions on my cabinets, but one thing I am now considering is pickled oak, as that is what the rest of the woodwork in my house is (doors & trim), and that is what I was trying to match. For some reason, I didn't realize that I could match that. Maybe b/c it's a 100 year old house and I just assumed that whatever process was used on this wood wouldn't be available now? I don't really know. I didn't really even consider it. But one of the contractors who came out said he could match it perfectly, and a whole new world opened up for me.

I would say it is an immature female oriole as well. I had one come to my yard this summer. It is quite pale compared to an adult female; looked kind of yellowish as opposed to the orange of the adults. Because the color wasn't as bright as the orange of the adults, I wasn't too sure if it was an oriole until someone confirmed the ID on this site. And it is usually only the orioles that go to hummingbird feeders and feed on the nectar.

This is very much an oriole. Many orioles are yellow, as there are several different species (most are western birds; there are only two eastern oriole species). That brings me to an important point: please always include a location when requesting a bird ID. Many related species overlap in plumage, and a location can help narrow down a species when a limited view is all we're given.

With that said, a quick perusal through any birding field guide/website will demonstrate the variability between oriole species and also within a single species. For instance, only an adult breeding male Baltimore Oriole is bright orange with a black head; the female and juveniles are a duller yellowish/goldish orange with similarly colored heads. I believe that your bird is either a female or juvenile Baltimore Oriole, gauging from the wing markings, tail, and color.

After going through a lot of pictures, I have to agree with you guys whole heartily about the oriole, the wings do give it away.
That is a first, only time Iv'e seen a Oriole was in Baltimore, MD, Never seen one down here in SC USA.
As for as my location, I'm sorry, I thought it was there, but the Id. mark number didn't forward as it usually does, I'll have to watch that, I live in zone 7, upstate in SC.
