Bird Won't Fly - Need Advice

We believe a small bird flew in to our bow window yesterday and hurt itself to the point of not being able to fly. We found it just sitting in the mulch out in front of our house beneath the window. We had also heard a bang a few hours earlier that we didn't recognize, which now we believe was the bird. I'm not sure what type of bird it is, it has a greenish gray back with a light colored chest area and a small white strip on each side of it's head.

We brought it in to the house last night to keep it safe and all it seems to do is sleep. My husband threw it up in the air and it flew around our living room awkwardly and landed on a cabinet and then fell off. A similar thing happened earlier today when my husband put it out on our deck and when he went back to check on it a half hour later, it was gone. He found it next to our house beside the deck on our driveway.

I have tried to find a Wildlife Rehab in our area but there's nothing. I've also tried emailing one that quite a way away from where we live but haven't received an answer. I'm at a loss of what to do for this bird, I do not want to see it die and I don't know what to do to help it survive.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm.....sounds like a red-eyed vireo. Sometimes, they've injured their brains (concussion) and they just need to be kept safe and quiet.
Does it appear to have any wing problem? Leg problem?

My guess is that it's had a concussion. If you can't keep it in a cage inside (with water and food), I would try to put a little fence around it in a very protected area outside. Do you have anything like chicken wire? And be sure to include water in there. And maybe consider putting a decal on some of your windows, so birds don't fly into them.

I uploaded a couple of photos of the bird for identification. It does not appear to have anything wrong with it, i.e., broken wing, broken leg, etc., but I'm no expert. I have water in it's crate but it looks like it hasn't drank any for 2 days, but not 100% sure.

What do the poor things do when it rains? I think the problem is that the birds do not see the pen as "home". The situation should improve when they have a proper chicken house... unless they get too used to roosting just anywhere. Even when they get the chicken house, they will need to learn that it is home. Closing them in at night could be a chore for a bit. I suggest you try an interim solution. Will the chicken house be going inside the dog kennel? If so, I think if you were to get an appliance carton and close it all but a "pop-hole" (chicken door) and a bunch of ventilation holes that they may use it, once they are in the pen. They should feel safer inside it than in the open. And rather than rounding them up AFTER they start camping out for the night, why not take some special treats down to them close to their bedtine, stand inside the pen and call "Heeere chick-chick-chick!" Once they get used to that routine, getting them settled should be a lot easier. As a general rule, it is far better to get the housing built BEFORE you get the critters. You'd save yourself a lot of headaches.

Phoebe: Sorry I didn't have time to post a more complete response last night. I live in a subdivision and on a very small lot so I only have room for one nest box. I put it up when we moved here in 2004 and have had 3 nestings in it each year since then. I have titmice and nuthatches too, as well as song sparrows, Carolina wrens, chickadees and downy woodpeckers (and unfortunately, house sparrows) that all come for the meal worms I put out for the blues. It's no problem except it runs my meal worm bill up. The blues boss all of the above and on very cold or snowy days will stand guard at the feeder as if they fear I will run out. I no longer feed seed eating birds (except in severe weather). When I did I was overrun with cowbirds and starlings that nested in the trees behind the house, ate all the seed and harrassed the blues all summer. So now it's just the birds listed above, plus the gold finches and the hummers. Still, because I provide water, my yard is a virtual beehive at times and I know the blues would prefer more solitude, but it is a small yard and they accept all the bustle. I know of only one other BB house in this development and I see blues nesting in abandoned woodpecker holes in the trees behind the house. I don't know how successful they are with the starlings up there but to me it is an indication that real estate is in short supply in this area. They don't always take many meal worms in the summer but they do appreciate them on days 13 to 18, when they have to hustle to fill 4 or 5 hungry mouths. All I can think of in your case is that there must be something in your area that threatens them (HOSP, cats, nest box location)and they have found a more ideal location that they go to to nest. As I said, they should be able to control the other birds and with your help, the HOSP too. But if the BBs' nest is nearby, they should continue to come to your place for meal worms and water, if you provide it. I too see hawks but the birds have a very good alarm system so they rarely are successful and I have never lost a BB yet. Knock on wood. Best of luck. Dave

I would take him to your closest wildlife rehab place, and ASK them what they will do. Ours never euthanizes anything until after their vet has looked at them, and they go to extraordinary lengths to save all animals. I turned in a common crow once, and they gave me updates as to its condition every 2 days, did surgery on it, and it survived and was released. Jackie

I read this thread a few days ago and didn't have time to respond... I am about as far opposite you (and many of the others) as could be. I worked for an airline for 10 yr early in my working life and I was ready to travel at a moment's notice. I kept a bag in the trunk of my car! Still, I sympathize and can relate somewhat as my ex had terrible anxiety with flying-- to the point that he NEVER slept before a flight. It caused many arguments until I realized he just wasn't going to change. I think the thing that strikes me most about your worries is that they are all things that are out of your control. For many of us, me included, having no control is a recipe for anxiety (and sometimes for me-- bad behavior). I think the key is to recognize what you can control and what you can't. I liked the idea of planning an extra day for your trip-- a "throw away day". If everything goes smoothly, you have a bonus day.. if not, then nothing is lost. It doesn't sound like your uber planning is causing you stress-- in fact, it is part of the control you DO have over your trip. I would never go to such lengths but that's just my personality. I am the person running to the store on day 1 because I have forgotten a hairbrush or my new shoes I HAD to have gave me blisters. I say stick with your routine-- but be sure to plan a relaxing first day of vac. It will balance out. Mostly, I just wish you a wonderful trip!

I'm still thinking a red-eyed vireo, but maybe a young one. I'm concerned he/she might have some brain swelling. Can you try to give it some water with an eye dropper.....or maybe just putting some on your finger and rubbing it against it's beak?

Can you gently check out it's wings.....pull them out and see if there is anything crooked or causes it to flinch.

Brain swelling is what I've been thinking. When I attempt to pull out it's wing, he tries flapping them and I still can't see anything. I have tried giving it water but will try again. Do you have any idea what I can give it to eat?

I don't know what to do for him but if he's dying, I'd rather him die in the house where it is warm and safe, rather than dying outside in the elements. He doesn't seem to be in any type of distress, but who knows, I know nothings about injured birds.

Thank you for trying to give me some guidance, he's so helpless and fragile, it just breaks my heart.

I wish some others would chime in and offer advice.
You could try chewing up some worms and feeding them to it. :)
Can you hold its head and sort of force it's beak open a little, for the water?

Does it show any other signs of a brain problem? Does it seem like a real young bird?

I'm glad it has you to take care of it!

Please don't try to force it to fly until it's ready! I don't think you should throw it up in the air to "see" if it could fly. In the meantime, keep it in a large, open box and call your local pet shop and explain the bird's situation; they may have something that you can feed it or google "what to feed injured bird" and see if there are any ideas you can use. I hope an expert stops by soon here. Thx for caring for it and I hope the poor thing gets better soon. Good luck

I think bird's normally couldn't fly because if there is any problem with wings.
