Nest I.D. please

This is the first time I've seen this nest. It's in a buckeye tree, on a limb about 6' off the ground. I only had my telephoto lens with me, so I couldn't get close enough to hold the leaves away from it. It's sort of a cone shape and is about 3-4" across and the same in depth.
I'm not sure what those white strands are. It was a hanging nest.

Any ideas? I have a Birds' Nests book, but all the pics are from above the nest. There was at least 1 baby bird in it. Vireo? Warbler? Flycatcher? Any guesses?

Sorry it's not a better picture. I can go back out tomorrow and use a different lens.........but I sure don't want to attract any predators to it.

What I can see from your picture looks like an oriole nest. Certainly a common bird where you live, but it would be nice to see the whole thing.

Hmmm.....I don't think so. I've seen oriole nests around here before and they are much more grassy/stringy and hang a bit more freely. This was very compact and very tightly anchored.......it almost looked like OSB board with white strings around it.

The Towhees around here-East Tennessee-certainly sing the "Drink" part of their song, also the "Tea" part-sometimes written as towhee. This am I heard "Drink, drink, drink....long pause...your tea" Then just "drink drink..." I think it's a little later in the year when I hear the "tea" or "towhee" part alone. Right now I have an Eastern Wood Peewee that repeats "pee-oh-wee" over & over & it's kinda mournful sounding. He sings from a cedar tree in a small cemetary across the road & it seems fitting somehow. Susan

Mutilated bird I.D. please....would a owl do this?

Its a duck, a green wing teal I believe. Birds have a number of predators, small and medium mammals, other birds, reptiles. Could be a hawk or owl, or a cat or fox or raccoon. Squirrels even will raid nests I believe.

Yes, Old Forester got it right. these little birds are so cute to watch. I have a House Wren tending a nest made in the Macho Fern pot. Dril;led a hole in the plant base soil and laid 4 eggs. Little heads are poking around in there now and momma wren is busy all day. I wanna know what's the black thing they bring back for the babies? A worm? A fly?

"Mustard" is correct in the broad sense unless you see some sort of root vegetable forming, but there are many different types. Reminds me very much of how my Mizuna grows except the leaves are more rounded with yours. Don't know if some type of Arugula would grow like that. You have no idea what you planted? Do you remember the choices?

Went out again with my telephoto. I was lucky enough to get the mom's (dad's?) picture, albeit not a great one.
Here it is. I'm thinking vireo of some sort?? I'm baffled. let me know what you think. I'll post a pic of its backside too, if that helps.

I think I've solved the mystery! I think it's a warbling vireo.
I don't think they've been to our property before....but who knows for sure. They are very secretive.

Our 35 acres has exploded with growth this year. I think it's because of the severe winter we had, followed by an incredibly wet spring. So much fun getting a new bird around here! Last year, I started hearing a northern parula, and I'm still hearing it.

I've googled the warbling vireo's nest and some of the images look just like mine. Woohoo!!

That strong facial pattern, bold eyeline, flat head, and large dark bill make me want to say Red-eyed Vireo rather than Warbling.
Great find on that cool nest!

Thanks interesting TMFF.....yes, I hear a red-eyed vireo constantly! (ad nauseum........hahaha)
I guess the nests in my book for the red-eyed and some of the pics didn't look like it.
But I'm sure you're probably right. I just couldn't see any red in the eye, and it didn't seem as green as I've seen in R-E vireos.

It was cool finding a totally different nest than I've ever seen before! Do you have any idea what that white stuff is? I was thinking spider web stuff, but it would take alot of those.

I didn't think these little guys were that far along, but yesterday I found this. The mom was feeding it, but she flew away before I could get my camera ready. That would have been a great shot. I'm trying not to disturb them too often.
