Love the Goldfinches

This little fellow has been coming to my feeder the past week or so. Other years I've had about 8 goldfinches; this year I've only seen one so far. The birds have been so late in coming this year because of the unusually cold spring. Hopefully, more are still on their way. it's kind of lonely for this little guy.

Bless! Poor Goldflinch, have you seen anymore since or is he still on his lonesome? Probably just likes being around you, i've seen birds do that before.

No, he is still the only one I've seen coming around. Hopefully, he will find a mate and bring her to the feeder with him.

Thank you, all! I'll keep you informed on the newly dug areas... we just got in some hardy Buck roses, and they'll look lovely blooming in front of the house. We have dogs and barn cats patrolling, so the squirrels keep their distance... I haven't had too many bulb thieves to speak of. Cindee, every time I photograph or smell the Lilacs, I think of you... it's so hard to find things that actually do smell like lilacs... candles, soaps, oils... nothing is like the real thing.

Yes, its really gorgeous, and very difficult to stay in my office (without a window!) all day. We also did a lot of gardening on Sunday. We planted everything we had bought recently that had been sitting out in pots -- several shrubs and some perennials. It looked like a lot of things, but we still have a lot of gaps! I need to prune some shrubs, and cut back some perennials. I had several Rudbeckia hirtas, which have turned rather ugly after flowering, so I think I'll just cut them to the ground. I'm not sure if they'll be perennial here. My echinaceas are looking super at the moment (purple and white). I grew them from seed (wintersowing) and will definitely be growing some more this winter. Aren't there some parts of California where the weather is always like this?!

For years I had a tube feeder full of nyjer seed, but sparrows used it more than anything else. Only once in a while I would see a goldfinch eating from it. A month ago I replaced the tube feeder with a sock. There was an immediate increase in goldfinches, with up to a few of them on it several times the first week. After one week there was a big increase in goldfinches and it has not let up yet. There are almost always 1-4 goldfinches on the sock and several times, including today, there have been 8-12 fighting each other to get a space on the sock. They are such beatiful birds and it is great to see so many of them now. I hang the sock from my tree about 6 feet from the ground and so far I've never seen any squirrels messing with it.

i had five fledgling lewis's woodpeckers this spring and when the parents brought them to the feeders the young ones tried every feeder i had including the nyjer and the necter feeders and the jelly dishes. but it did not take them long to pick their favorites most of them prefer the nuts and sunflower seeds and the cracked corn and suet blocks. but there are a couple that still eat the grape jelly and drink the sugar water and love to peck on watermelon rinds. but none of them did more than try the nyjer sock.

Well, I now have a female coming to the feeder as well as another 2 males so the numbers are slowing going up.

I've also seen a decline in goldfinches. Last year we would see at least a dozen or more. This year so far I've only seen one male and one female. We too had a cold spring but we've even seen them over the winter time. They are just not as yellow over winter. In the winter the males are a dull yellowish with a greenish tint. As it gets warmer they get more yellow.

Beautiful catch. I love the way he's cocking his head. I haven't seen a goldfinch in years, when we stayed at a bed and breakfast in upper Michigan. Even then, we didn't get this close.

I love them, too, but they're eating my beautiful yellow gerbera blossoms as soon as they open!
