Finally a picture of a Gold Finch
Comments (11)Few years ago I had lots of goldfinches, so many that I bought a 22 perch niger seed feeder and it was 'standing room only, single line, please' most of the time, also had a sock like shown above and had to refill it weekly. But ..... they've become more sparse over the past 2-3 years. I didn't realize they migrated North, so were probably just passing thru, but stayed longer back then. My 'Birds of the Carolinas' book (author Stan Tekiela) says goldfinches are "becoming less common near the Coast in summer, leaving in April for nothern states". My copy is a 2001 copyright date so that's pretty old news. That said, I have seen a couple in the past week - they are so pretty, wish they'd hang around!...See MoreGold Finches
Comments (5)I live in Northern Illinois and Gold Finches are fairly common around here. In the winter, they will flock around a thistle seed feeder and eat about 1-2 lbs of seed a day. In the summer, they are not so common around the feeder because they have natural sources of food....See MoreFinches in winter
Comments (9)Hi, sorry, a little late to the party. I just moved to CO and this is my first winter here, used to live in MI. In MI, I rarely saw a finch in the winter. Here is CO, I have a lot of finches (red right now but some were yellow in the fall). I also get titmice (titmouses?), chickadees, downy woodpeckers, and flickers on a daily basis. Anyway, I have both black oilers in a tube and suet basket. The finches, titmice, and chickadees seem to like the suet. They eat both the seed and the suet, but the suet is what attracted them in the first place....See MoreFinches Disappeared?
Comments (5)I live near Denver, Colorado. The goldfinches are not gold this time of year, so it's easy to miss them. But of all the birds in my yard, they are the only ones that have interest in the dried seedheads rather than the feeders. I have seen them eating seeds from the dried seedheads of echinacea and hyssop. They seem to have no interest in the feeder this time of year....See Moreclaireplymouth z6b coastal MA
