Has anyone in the Chicago area seen any Baltimoe Orioles yet this year?

When I lived west of Birmingham, AL, the biggest push of Baltimores was the last week of April. Therefore I think you're at least a couple weeks away from seeing them in Chicago, although a few could show up before that.

eBird data shows earliest reports over the past ten years have been toward the end of April.

I think you probably should separate the strands into random lengths and thicknesses. Then again, she may want to do that herself. At least loosen them. As for color, she sought out the yellow binder twine. I have a lot of yellow plastic binder twine leftover from when my farm was hayed. I just cut it and shredded off some relatively small strands and placed it back where she had been working on it. I haven't seen her since, but now I'm seeing lots of males. I'll be putting out my jelly jars tonight. I'm experimenting w/orange marmalade (because we have a lot of it left over) and the traditional grape. I've not had any come to the halved oranges at all. I understand catbirds also come to jelly. We have a few in our fencerow and thicker woods but have never drawn them into our more open feeding area. Hopefully, we can lure them in as well as I love all their unique calls.

There's a Blue Jay in there too, at the very end. I'm not sure if that's an adult male or female Baltimore Oriole at the grape jelly. The females are really variable and sometimes similar to the males. It seems too early in the season for it to be an immature male. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable birders here will comment. I also wonder about the oriole in the gooseberries. Is that an adult female or a fledgling? Identification is so much easier when an adult male has the brilliant contrasting plumage with solid black. Oh, and I thought you were planning to keep the blueberries all to yourself. Did you remove the netting to give the orioles a treat or is this one a dedicated bird feeder? In any case, it's fun to watch the orioles having a treat. Thanks, Claire

Interesting, tom. When I was a kid growing up in Miami orioles were common, but now that I think about it I rarely see them anymore. Don't think I've ever seen one here on Hutchinson Island where I've lived for 18 years, but then I've never seen a hummer here, either.

When apple trees start to bloom the orioles show up in my yard. Guaranteed.

Here in MA the orioles always show up within a day or two of the first hummingbird. If you follow the Spring 2013 Migration of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds map it might give you an idea of when to expect orioles.

I saw an orchard oriole yesterday in my backyard for the first time ever! So excited! lol!

I am thrilled!! I mean super excited!! I just spotted my first pair of Baltimore orioles today!! My neighbor has has an oriole feeder out for several years but we've never spotted one. Now she is in a nursing home and hasn't had anything in her feeder and NOW they showed up. So I rushed around my house and found some thick copper wire, wrapped it around a small plastic cup, glued a yellow lid to the bottom and filled it with home made oriole sugar water mixture. Crossing my fingers that they come back! I'm going to make another feeder with hooks to stick on some orange wedges. These are such stunning birds. How I spotted them was I was cleaning our sons bedroom and saw them out the window on the tops of my dogwood tree jumping across the tops. They did this for several minutes. I then rushed down to my yard after they flew off to see if they were in my yard but no luck. I sure hope they return. Absolutely STUNNING birds!!
