Bird house???

Help! I made this bird feeding station and would like to put a bird house on top. I like the Purple Martin homes because they are large and have multiple holes. I usually see wrens, finches, cardinals and blue jays among others like wood peckers, small and large variety. I am NOT a bird specialist, just an observer that would like to provide a nice home for any type of small wild bird. I'm not picky! Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can add to my masterpiece to make it a bird Taj Mahal? LOL

I'm no expert either but my first thought is that no bird would actually use the bird house if you placed it on top of that feeder station. There would be too much activity. I think they would prefer a quieter spot. If it's just for aesthetics, then fine, but if you want them to nest better find a different spot.

Thanks. I was wondering if that would be the case. I'll just build another post and put it in another location in my yard. I just thought it would be convenient having a grocery store right under your house!

sharpgirl, I can only share my experience w/ BB. For several years I put up houses built (I thought) to BB specs. No takers. And because I had seen BB on my farm I knew they were around, but I didn't know where they were nesting. Until one day I noticed that the 'fake' hollow owl I had attached to the roof peak of my small barn, had BB's coming and going around it. BB's had pecked a hole in the chest of owl and apparently built a nest inside. This is now the 2nd year that they're nesting there. Their nest is about 15-18 ft. off ground, 100 ft. from a feeder but hidden by a bldg., hole faces South, slightly southeast. BB's perch on barn roof before they enter the hole. Both male and female feed the babies. Area of nest is surrounded by either mowed pasture or lawn. No close trees for 50-60 ft. I overflow a large watering trough (for horse) several times a day and the BB's show up to bathe and frolic in the water, if it's warm outside. So my bluebirds outsmarted me and made their own personalized nest and they must like it cause they've returned this year. Good Luck with attracting your own BB's. PS/I'm in zone 9B Central Fl.

OutsidePlaying, I have the great honor of having Western Bluebirds nest in my bird box year after year. One year there were three litters (I don't know what you call a batch of bird babies). They arrive early and build nests of dirt and rocks, grass and feathers. I don't know how they do it. They are beautiful little creatures. My nextdoor neighbor has the Wild Birds Unlimited franchise in my town. The birds love it here! I would definitely visit a store such as that and choose a house that is right for the type of bird you want to attract. For me, aesthetics are way down the list because I want whatever the birds want. I built my bird box at a workshop in 2005. I think it's recycled redwood fencing or barn wood. Something arcy said was true in my case. The first year I had the box no birds came. Then one year I had some major landscaping done and they stayed away that year too. I love my bluebirds. They connect me with the Creator. ETA: If I ever get a tattoo, and I'm not ruling it out, one of the things I've considered is a bluebird.

What a great idea to build that feeding station. It looks great. I use a double sheppard's hook for the same purpose.
I'm not an expert either but what I do know is that Hostanista is correct.
Another thing to consider about birdhouses is that different birds have different requirements when it comes to picking a home, something to consider if you're also building birdhouses. Size matters as well as how big the entrance is. It's also advisable to re-enforce the opening so larger birds can't widen it to get in.
They might also be picky about location and what direction the entrance faces, something to consider when putting a house up. I suggest to research the birds you'd like to see in a birdhouse and find out what kind they like, where to put it and how to face it.
Somehow, if we give them what they want, they seem to show up even if they've never have before.

If you have your heart set on a Purple Martin house, do some specific research. Every PM condo I've ever seen was out in a field, by itself, away from trees and feeders.
